Marking the residual alcohol content of non-alcoholic beers (Alk.<0.5 %vol.) on the corresponding labels

The term “non-alcoholic” is not legally defined for beer. The alcohol content of alcoholic beverages only has to be labelled from 1.2 percent by volume. In Germany, beers advertised as “alcohol-free” are not objected to if there is a residual alcohol content of up to 0.5 percent by volume.

Almost all producers of non-alcoholic beers and mixed beer drinks voluntarily label the alcohol content. This goes back to a recommendation of the German Brewers Association to mark the residual alcohol content of non-alcoholic beers (Alk.<0.5 %vol.) on the corresponding labels. This voluntary labelling as well as the extended service with practical consumer information on the internet are the result of constructive talks between the DBB with the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) and consumer centres of the Länder in 2014. A representative consumer survey had previously shown that many consumers otherwise understand the term "alcohol-free" literally in the sense of 0.0 % vol.
