I drink responsibly

Hungary’s Dreher Breweries has a responsible drinking initiative, called “I drink responsibly” that has been running since 2009. As part of it, Dreher in 2017 launched “Badily” (a play on words, merging the English word ’bad’ and a Hungarian word ’dili’ which means ’craziness’), an interactive drama pedagogy session that calls the attention of especially the Generation Z on the harmful effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption, excessive consumption and binge drinking. In 2019 Badily won a well-known Hungarian CSR award (CSR Hungary Award).
Between 2017 and 2020, Badily ran in secondary schools: teachers could invite the session and build it in their classes as a prevention programme. Badily was written in the language and style of the Generation Z, thus it can effectively bring the main topic and problem close to them. It was played by theatre actors, who had experience in drama pedagogy. Within the interactive play, the story of a young high-school girl, partying and drinking too much, was shared with the participants.
Badily combines social media tools with the method of drama pedagogy. Students got special homework before the play: they were asked to follow the main character’s Instagram account. Thus, by the time the actress walked into the classroom, students knew more about her than she did herself. The play consisted of three acts, each seven minutes long. Between the acts, the actors and the students discussed the presented scenes. At the end of the play students advised the main character, so they would have messages that they could use later in real life.
Between 2017 and 2020, 3,500 high school students took part in the session personally and through them, we could reach their parents and friends as well.
In 2020, partially due to Covid, Badily was moved to an online platform, and from 2021 it became available as Badily Digital. With this transformed programme, we aimed to make the alcohol prevention initiative available to a wider audience. Thanks to the new interactive web platform (www.alkohol.info.hu), we managed to open the program for any interested individual and community in Hungary.
The digital version of the program was created with the help of the live programme’s actors. Badily Digital consists of short YouTube videos that are combined with tasks that help the participants to process the events. At the end of a video, participants can even choose interactively how they want to continue the story.
Badily Digital can also be done alone. However, we recommend doing it in a group, led by an adult (e.g. schools, camps, clubs, associations, etc.) to generate more meaningful dialogues about the harmful effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption, underage alcohol consumption and binge drinking.
